We have just returned back from Truk Lagoon in Micronesia. One of the best wreck diving spots in the world.
19 Divers diving the World War 2 Japanese wrecks. Breif history lesson on Truk. Truk Lagoon was a navy base for the Japanese back in the second world war. On February 17 1944 and Amercian Recon plane spotted the base, reported home and soon after 'Operation Hailstorm' was underway. Around 500 US planes flew over and bombed the Japanese navy base, sinking majority of the fleet. There are around 70 wrecks in the lagoon. Varying from Battleships, cruisers, cargo carriers, aircrafts, submarine, tenders and merchant ships.
Our trip begins in Carins meeting everyone at the airport, having a few beers, playing pool and talking about the expedition is awaiting for us on Truk. We flew from Carins to Guam around about 4 hour flight, then Guam to Truk (Chuuck) Lagoon around 1.5 flight. Soon as we arrived at Blue Lagoon Dive resort we were straight in the water diving that arfternoon. We did 2 dives a day including a night dive and to finish off the trip a shark dive.
Fujikawa Maru, San Francisco Maru, Kensho Maru, Sunkisan Maru, Betty Bomber Plane, 169 Submarine
Are just some of the wrecks we dove. Exploring the wrecks was amazing seeing Torpedos, Kamikaze subs, bullets, weapons, gun turrents, tanks, jeeps, Human remains such as skulls and bones. We also managed to squeeze a night dive on the Fujikawa and a must do shark dive on the northern end of Weno Island.
